Roger Raveel
Mountain path in Valréas
Acrylic on canvas, 74 x 95 cm
1982
Private collection on long-term loan
From the 1970s and also in the 1980s, Raveel's career peaked thanks to several retrospective exhibitions and good sales of his works. While in the 1940s and 1950s he could barely afford to lose his canvas, he is now able to travel regularly. Roger and Zulma often travel to France and regularly stay at their flat in Ostend. During the trips, he stays at work and produces numerous paintings and drawings. They are usually not grand, ambitiously planned 'masterpieces' but rather careless, seemingly made for pleasure. Yet these works are penetrating and show us who Raveel essentially is: a genuine painter who knows how to translate a visual impression in an intense way, freehand and from his own point of view.
