Bricklayers
oil on canvas, mounted on hardboard, 153,5 x 121,5 cm
1953

In several paintings and drawings from the early 1950s, we recognise figures at work: gardeners, farmers, plasterers, bricklayers. The painting, exceptionally large for the period, consists of predominantly sober tones, only the red of the figure's face at the back stands out. The figure in front is given volume by the stripes on the suit he is wearing; the figure in the background is black and flatter. Masonry is represented by vertical and horizontal lines. The rhythm of lines and stripes in the rear figure's shoe - it looks like an Adidas brand sports shoe -, of the bricks at the back and the curved lines on the left lend the work a certain dynamism.
