Roger Raveel
Self-portrait with cart
Oil on canvas and mixed media, 145 x 114 cm
1981
The cart is a motif we see recurring in numerous paintings, objects and drawings. The real wheel makes the painting come apart at the seams. In the 1970s and 1980s, Raveel creates works in which he contemplates or questions his artistry. Here he depicts himself with his hands leaning on the iconic cart, realistic, imperturbable, looking at the viewer like a magician, aware of his mastery. A few hard-to-identify elements and the mirror also give the work a mental charge.
