Roger Raveel
Amsterdam (the guest room of Galerie Espace)
Ink on paper, 27,7 x 36,9 cm
1977

In 1965, Raveel exhibited his work for the first time at the Amsterdam gallery Espace. It immediately marked his breakthrough in the Netherlands. Numerous exhibitions followed, at the gallery but also in major Dutch museums, such as Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, Groninger Museum and Museum of Modern Art in Arnhem.

The owners of Galerie Espace, Eva Bendien and Rutger Noordhoek, have become good friends of Roger and Zulma. Consequently, when Roger and Zulma have exhibitions in the Netherlands, they regularly stay with Eva and Rutger in Amsterdam. This is captured in this ink drawing where we see Zulma reading in the guest room of gallery Espace.

After the death of the gallery owners, the collaboration comes to an end. In 2009, Roger Raveel Museum organised an exhibition highlighting Raveel's long-standing connection with the gallery and its artists.
