Roger Raveel

Self-portrait with painting

In the 1970s, Raveel made several works in which he considers or questions the themes of painting and artistry. Here he portrays himself as an artist, in his painter's coat, posing with a painting he created, very realistically, looking unapologetically into space, aware of his mastery. Some abstract elements, such as the cloud-like shape on the right and the square enclosing Raveel's head lend the work a visual and mental charge.
