Roger Raveel
The reader
Acrylic on canvas, 211,5 x 396,5 cm
1989
This is one of the largest canvases in the Roger Raveel Museum's collection. The Reader is two metres high and four metres wide. The monumental size is in alienating contrast to the image. We are looking at a character over the shoulder who is quietly and intimately reading. He or she seems lost in thought, bending deeply over the sheet that is empty and at the same time appears to be a large white square.
