Roger Raveel
The creation of woman
oil on canvas and mixed media, 195 x 145 cm
1996

In Roger Raveel's later work, themes of birth, creation, war and death emerge, often with magical-realist overtones. The paint treatment also becomes leaner, more volatile, more contemplative. In these works, the complexity of Raveel's visual language is fully expressed: colouristic, realistic and abstract zones, flat and spatial parts, a mirror that draws the surroundings within the painting, determine the plastic vividness of the whole. In this work, Raveel portrays himself as an artist-creator. With a simple line - in which we clearly recognise Zulma's profile - he brings his wife to life. The dove flying up diagonally provides movement and drama.
