Roger Raveel
A moment without end, 10 May 1940
Oil on canvas and mixed media, 145 x 431 cm
1983 - 1988
An overwhelming and terrifying painting is A moment without end, 10 May 1940 . It is a triptych on which the artist evokes his memories of World War II. People walk around in despair or stare ahead. It is a work with great dramatic power through the posture and rhythm of the figures and hands, and through the screaming ferocity of the colour: the red as the colour of danger but at the same time as the colour of space. The bloody touches on the fingertips of the reaching hand and the barred gaze of Roger Raveel himself give this work a pressing charge.
