Roger Raveel
Bycicle against garden wall
Oil on canvas
1964
Private collection on long-term loan
From 1962 on, following a number of years creating almost exclusively abstract works, Raveel starts to re-integrate figurative elements into his work. It is as if he is creating a symbiosis between his visual language of the early 1950s and his subsequent adventure into abstraction. The cat, the man, the wall, the bicycle and all the other typical elements of Raveel’s universe appear here in broad, direct strokes and vibrant, thrilling colours. An expressive tension prevails between figurative and abstract elements.
