Roger Raveel
Yellow man with cart
Oil on canvas, 110,5 x 80,5 cm
1952

Painted when the artist was 31 years old, this work contains many elements that typify the painter’s oeuvre: the bicycle trailer, the poles, the concrete wall, the striped figure with cap, the ground represented in a linear fashion. The pole on the right appears to be a white void between two black lines that continues outside the bounds of the painting. Raveel lets the painting flow out into its surroundings, so to speak. In this painting, we can already see the contrast between the abstract and the concrete: the bicycle trailer and the wheel hub are rendered rather realistically, while the wheel itself is rendered as an autonomous red circle. Roger Raveel’s work is full of contradictions and disruptive elements that undermine the unity of the painting and destabilise the viewer’s position with respect to the painting.
