Roger Raveel
Landscape with child
oil on paper, mounted on hardboard, 35,5 x 47 cm
1948
This is a distinct little work within Raveel's oeuvre that can be compared to few others. From 1948 onwards, we see Raveel's vision emerging, for which he is admittedly influenced by some notorious predecessors. The landscape in this painting is reduced to a few planes and broad lines that suggest depth. The futility of the figure and the expressive paint strokes bring to mind the work of Edvard Munch. Notions of loneliness and alienation are also present.
