Roger Raveel
Landscape with red field
oil on canvas, mounted on hardboard, 26,5 x 52,0 cm
1948

1948 is a particularly productive year for Roger Raveel. This year can be seen as the starting point of an extraordinary artistic evolution. In many of these early works, we can already see the characteristics of Raveel's visual language appearing. A lot of paintings inspired by the rural environment emerge in which Raveel arrives at a synthetic view of reality in bright colours and shapes. Things are reduced to their essence with an eye for the mood of the whole. The paint strips are simple yet expressive, certain areas are transparent and then others are applied in thick layers. The small format invites one to explore Raveel's experimental touch up close.
