Roger Raveel
Domesticity
Oil on hardboard, 85 x 71 cm
1948
Many of the still lifes painted by Roger Raveel in this period feature a chair or a figure near a table strewn with everyday objects. Likewise, and as the title suggests, the painting Domesticity, presents a domestic scene in which Raveel’s wife Zulma stands in as a model. Some works from this period still betray the influences of Flemish expressionism that Raveel grew up with as a young art student. Yet it is already palpable here that Raveel seeks to depict the world and everyday things in a new, more contemporary way. This is no longer the compact, dark and closed-off world of the expressionists. These works by Raveel are more ‘opened up’ and characterised by bright colours and planes.
