Roger Raveel
Little flowerpot
oil on canvas, mounted on hardboard, 34,5 x 27 cm
1948

From 1948 on, Raveel consciously sought to look at the things around him with fresh, new eyes. With this attitude, the painter creates, among other works, a series of still lifes in which he sets out to depict contemporary objects informed by their specific characteristics and appearance. He also makes a number of works featuring flower pots and plants or cacti. In this disarming and poetic little work, everything is rendered simply and effectively reduced to its essence. In his younger years, Raveel did not have the means to purchase canvasses for painting, instead applying his paints to cheap sheets of hardboard that had the rough texture of canvas on one side.
