Roger Raveel
Semblance of a man bending forward
oil on canvas, mounted on hardboard, 121,5 x 101,5 cm
1956
In 1955, Raveel's work evolves towards abstraction. He becomes convinced that his work has become too cerebral and systematic. Raveel felt a certain rigidity and wanted to return to painting more spontaneously. Figures and objects are no longer rendered so explicitly: everything is reduced to a number of rudimentary forms or signs. Raveel tries to get back in touch with the organic, the natural. His painterly touch becomes more spontaneous and rough, the colourite brighter. The size of his works is also gradually increasing. In this work, thanks to the title and knowledge of previous works, we recognise a man standing bent over, right in front of a concrete wall scratched in white paint.
