Roger Raveel
Bull
oil on hardboard, 123 x 125 cm
1957
By the mid-1950s, Raveel feels that his work is in danger of becoming too systematic. He seeks to reconnect with nature – the organic – in an unforced way. Around 1955 his paintings and drawings become looser, more abstract and direct. There are hardly any figurative principles to be observed, although the titles sometimes make a nod to reality. During this period, Raveel is mainly interested in the plasticity of language rather than the image. Here the bull is suggested through the brushstrokes, the linework and the use of colour.
