Roger Raveel
Woman ironing
oil on paper on hardboard, 115,0 x 89,0 cm
1951

Throughout his oeuvre, Roger Raveel depicts his wife Zulma in her daily activities. Playing cards, sitting at the table, in front of the window, in front of the embellishment mirror, or here: ironing. Raveel's paintings are full of contradictions: the red represents the space behind and contrasts with the blue of the arm that jumps sharply forward and thus comes to stand between painting and viewer. Raveel's paintings break at the seams and continue into the surrounding space.

The objects are translated plastically from their individuality and their interrelationships. Notable are the wood structure of the table legs, the linear chair, the pot with accentuated light and dark areas, the pair of scissors that is only a silhouette and the fading face.
