Roger Raveel
Table with wine glass
oil on paper, mounted on hardboard, 55 x 73 cm
1950
In the early 1950s, Roger Raveel painted a series of still lifes with tables, often viewed diagonally from. The table just doesn't seem to fit into the picture, nor does the empty chair. On the tabletop lie scissors, a book, a bowl. More difficult to read - because transparent - is the wine glass reduced to its essence. The still life is a portrait of the everyday life of Roger and Zulma who had a very modest existence in the years after World War II. At this time, Raveel has no money to buy painting canvas often, so he works on paper or on small wooden boards he finds at the local sawmill.
