Roger Raveel
[Imagination and reality in cosmic connection (Portrait of father Gustaaf Raveel and his daughter-in- law Zulma)
Oil on canvas, 195,5 x 145,5 cm
2004

Raveel's late works often have a more contemplative, intimate, introspective character. The use of colour becomes fainter, the application of paint more sparse.

This is a melancholic, somewhat sad work. We see two of the most important people in Raveel's life: his father Gustaaf (who died in 1973) and his wife Zulma. Both are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for countless drawings, paintings and graphic works.

Zulma we see on the back, she seems to be turning away from the viewer and life. To the right above her, in a rectangle looms the memory of father and father-in-law Gustaaf Raveel. He is depicted with eyes closed, and colourless as if wearing a death mask.
