Roger Raveel
Four white posts in my garden
Oil on hardboard, 48 x 50,5 cm
1948

1948 is an important year in Raveel's oeuvre. The painter's typical visual language gradually takes shape. Raveel wants to look at his rural surroundings with fresh and uninhibited eyes. He made a large number of paintings, modest in size, in which his synthetic view of reality stands out.

In this painting, included in the Flemish Government's Masterpieces List, things are reduced to their essence without abstracting them. Raveel makes visible the plastic and spatial relationships between facade, hedge, house, trees and sky. Against the thoughtful manner of painting, the posts appear white and separate. The rather spontaneous scripture with which the roof is emphasised also shows Raveel's desire to make things speak for themselves.
