16. The Square of the New Vision
Raveel paints many walls throughout his life. They often take centre stage in his compositions, as horizontal lines that contrast with the vertical shape of the post
In 1998, he created a sculpture based on a wall. The Wall of Imagination is a 40-metre-long installation and contains many typical Raveel elements: mirrors, white squares, posts, a gate and figures. The walls undulate like the River Leie, showing silhouettes of people or village buildings. In the group of sculptures, you can recognise Raveel, Zulma, Raveel's right-hand man Luc Levrau and his wife. There is also an anonymous character and, of course, a cat. Note the integrated trees: they look real, but are actually made of concrete.
The Wall of Imagination is part of a larger whole that has been christened The Square of the New Vision.
In front of the square, you will find a pollard willow with a mirror on top that reflects the village in the artwork.
