17. House with studios in Hoevestraat
In 1968, Roger moved into this house on Hoevestraat with Zulma and his father Gustaaf. The flax barn next to the house was converted into a painting studio. In the garden, an old stable was transformed into an etching studio. The house was modernly furnished, with white walls and furniture by Emiel Veranneman, who was also active as Raveel's gallery owner. The modern interior is noticeable in the works created during that period.
At the time of the move, Raveel was already a recognised artist. In 1966, he made his breakthrough with his first major retrospective exhibition at the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels. In 1968, he participated in Documenta 4 in Kassel and represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale. Gustaaf Raveel died in 1973. After his death, a considerable number of retrospective exhibitions of Raveel's work took place at home and abroad.
In May 2009, Zulma, Raveel's muse and faithful companion, also died at the age of 96. A year later, Raveel remarried Marleen De Muer. He lived here until his death.
