Roger Raveel
Cart to carry the sky
oil on wood and mixed media, 85 x 90 x 75 cm
1968
The (bicycle) cart is a familiar motif in Raveel's paintings and drawings. We see it in relation to the concrete wall, the post, the man, the rooftops, the beanstalk. Often, in its ordinariness, it takes on the character of an alienating object. The cart's strong spatial character inspired Raveel in 1968 to transform it into a painting object. Real wheels recall the transport function, but the mirror at the top gives that function a purely poetic meaning: the trailer transports the sky, the clouds, infinity.
