Roger Raveel
Self-reflection
oil on canvas and mixed media, 158 x 127 cm
2002
This is a later work by Raveel. It shows a more contemplative, even intimist character. The paint treatment in this later period is often fleeting, ethereal. Hands play an important role in Raveel's work. Here, his right hand rests on his knee. It's the hand of his painting and its hows the mastery of his medium. You could say that this hand is his self-portrait: it has a contemplative character. In the place of his face there's a mirror. It is the mirror of reality that is absorbed into Raveel's mind through painting. The visitor is invited to take a seat on the chair and let himself be ‘contained’ by the painting. It is an invitation to self-reflection.
